Eric Holder - Cabinet Musical Chairs Continues - The Washington Post - In The Loop

(Mandel Ngan - AFP/GETTY IMAGES) Cabinet musical chairs continues in earnest with the news Wednesday afternoon that Labor Secretary Hilda Solis is leaving and Attorney General Eric Holder , Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sibelius and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki are staying on.

We had thought Solis was staying for a bit longer but had the former California congresswoman pegged to return home at some point this year to run for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Labor unions have been pushing for one of their own to replace her.

Sibelius, who has a lot of work to do on Obamacare implementation, had long been expected to stay. Ditto Shinseki. We had written that Holder was good to stay at least to the end of this year and maybe into 2014.

The nomination of White House chief of staff Jack Lew to be Treasury secretary opens up his fine West Wing corner office, but it s not certain that President Obama will fill that job this week.

The front-runners, we re told, remain deputy secretary of state Tom Nides, deputy national security adviser Denis McDonough and former Biden chief of staff Ron Klain.

Smart money has been trending to McDonough of late.
